Support local this holiday season

As you step out this holiday season and wonder what to give that special someone in your life, remember to shop local. With the Pandemic still in full swing, it is important more now than ever to support local businesses. You may already know, but in case you don't, here are some reasons to shop locally:

1) Convenience- Convenience plays a huge part in our lives. After all, how easy is it to stop in when it’s within walking distance? Today, many people opt to shop locally because of its proximity to home.

2) Support the small guys- This is one of the most important reasons to shop local. Independent businesses and charities have been hit hard by the Pandemic. Buying from a local business or charity shop, whether from a market stall, an actual shop, or an online shop, is a great way to support them both financially and figuratively by showing you love what they do. This means they’ll be able to continue doing the great work that they do.

3) Invest in your community- Of course, shopping in a local business helps it financially, but it also supports the wider local economy and community. It’s an excellent opportunity to see new businesses continue to open and prosper within the neighborhood.

4) Unique Finds- Big brands usually follow a pattern of selling mass-created, trending seasonal products, whereas local and independent shops stock items that are traditionally made more locally and not available anywhere else. Whether it’s the pattern, design, or the flavors of the product, its uniqueness means there is very little chance you’ll find it elsewhere.

5) Quality- Local shops and businesses may not always be able to compete with larger chain stores and brands in terms of advertising. Local businesses are more likely to focus on the quality of the things they sell rather than the quantity.

Just know that local businesses certainly appreciate your purchase more than larger retail stores. Here are some of our favorite local shops for the holidays: Bittersweet (Brockport NY), Aaron's Alley (Rochester NY), Archimage (Rochester NY), Lift Bridge (Brockport NY), Mythic Treasures (Rochester NY). Also, don't forget that you can support service providers who rely mainly on commission. Buy a gift certificate for a facial, massage, or nail service. This will mean more to them than you know.
